A Turkish woman, Yesim Demir, slipped and fell off the cliff just moments after her fiance proposed to her. The recently engaged couple was planning a picnic at dusk to celebrate the special occasion when Yesim Demir, 39, fell more than 100 feet from the sheer cliff.
The incident took place on July 6 in the city of Canakkale, in northwest Turkey which claimed the life of Demir.
Nizamettin Gursu, Yesim’s fiance, had just proposed and was heading back to their car to get the cake and champagne when he heard her scream. Upon Gursu’s return to the location, he found Yesim had fallen off the cliff.
According to him, the couple picked this location because they thought it was romantic to be engaged here. He said, โWe picked it so that after the proposal, we would have a romantic memory. We also drank some alcohol. Everything took place all at once. She lost her balance and fell.โ
Police And Support Team Rushed To The Location
Gursu immediately dialled for assistance, but after 45 minutes of resuscitation attempts, doctors pronounced Gursu’s wife-to-be dead. As per the reports, Demir survived the 100-foot plunge but soon succumbed to her injuries.ย
The location was immediately roped off by the authorities as soon as information about the situation came to light, and an inquiry was started. According to authorities, the location will remain closed until it is available in a โcontrolled manner.โ
Demirโs friend told the local media that the location the couple chose for the proposal is among the most popular places to come and watch the sunset. He further stated that the road to this location is very bad and there are no precautions on the edge of the cliff. He suggests drawing a fence for precautionary purposes, and many people visit this location throughout the year.
