He studied at the James Monroe High School, located in Los Angeles, California and was an amateur radio operator in school. He then joined the Los Angeles Pierce College and the University of Southern California (USC). His IQ isn’t known.

After spending five years in prison for computer and wire fraud, he eventually left his life of crime and worked as a renowned white-hat hacker, cybersecurity consultant and author.

According to reports, Kevin Mitnick passed away on 16 July 2023 after suffering from pancreatic cancer for 14 months.

Kevin David Mitnick was a famous American computer security consultant, author, and former hacker who was born on 6 August 1963, in Van Nuys, Los Angeles, California, United States. He was born to parents Rochell Kramer and Alan Mitnick.

Kevin married Bonnie Vitello in 1987 before splitting in1990. He was last married to his second wife, Kimberley Mitnick, who is reportedly pregnant and was awaiting their first child together.

Kevin Mitnick hacking career

Kevin Mitnick carried out his major hacking when at the age of 16, when he broke into the Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC)’s computer network. He broke in and copied all of the company’s software. Following his crimes, the authorities eventually convicted him in 1988 and sent him to prison for 12 months. This was followed up by three years of supervised release.

However, before his supervised release ended, Mitnick carried out another hack into the Pacific Bell computer network. Due to this, the authorities issued a warrant for his arrest, while he fled and became a fugitive for over two and a half years. According to a report stated by the US Department of Justice, Mitnick obtained unauthorized access to several networks while spending his time as a fugitive. Mitnick reportedly used cloned cell phones in order to hide his location.

The FBI eventually arrested Mitnick later in 1995 in his apartment located in Raleigh, North Carolina. However, not everyone agreed with the arrest as it sparked a ‘Free Kevin’ movement amongst the hacking community. After spending his time in jail, he eventually reformed his life and became a white hat hacker, writer, and public speaker.

Mitnick even founded a company called Mitnick Security Consulting in 2003. The company offers counselling on cybersecurity to various Fortune 500 companies as well as government agencies . Later in 2011, Mitnick became the chief hacking officer and part owner of KnowBe4. KnowBe4 are a business company that offers phishing safety awareness training.

Following his death, the company issued a statement which said:

Kevin will always remain ‘the world’s most famous hacker’ and was renowned for his intelligence, humour and extraordinary skill with technology, surpassed only by his talent as the original ‘social engineer.”

After serving his time in prison, Kevin Mitnick co-authored four books with William L Simon and Robert Vamosi. While three of the books are on computer security, one of them is his autobiography.
