At 10:44 p.m. Saturday, Russell’s return was reported to the police, who promptly arrived at the scene. She had returned home on foot. Hoover Fire medics were also at the scene and transported Russell to UAB Hospital for a comprehensive evaluation.
Subsequent to her return, police obtained a statement from Russell at both her residence and the hospital. The details of the statement, however, have not yet been disclosed. Police and officials have stressed that while the evidence examination may be a “tedious process”, it is vital to ensure each piece is thoroughly assessed to help reconstruct the chain of events.
Carlee’s mother, Talitha Russell, expressed her relief on Facebook Sunday morning, stating, “God is faithful and He has answered (their) prayers.” The family has requested privacy during this time and plans to share more in the “near future”.
A disconcerting vanishing act
The mystery began to unfold on Thursday night when Hoover 911 received a call from Carlee Russell. She claimed to have spotted a male toddler in a diaper along the interstate near the John Hawkins Parkway exit. Oddly enough, Russell was the only individual to report this sighting.
Her parents, Talitha and Carlos Russell, reported that she was en route home from her job at the Woodhouse Day Spa in the Summit. She had stopped for food at The Colonnade and was roughly ten minutes away from her residence.
After stopping to check on the child, Carlee called a family member. Contact was lost soon after, but the phone line mysteriously remained open. On arrival, the police discovered her car and belongings, but both Carlee and the toddler were nowhere to be found.
Search and speculations in the Carlee Russell case
Carlee’s parents led a search party at the Hoover Met on Friday morning and appealed for assistance from the public. Her father, Carlos Russell, fervently expressed his determination: “We’re just gonna scour the earth. There’s no stopping us.”
The Russells also shared a report from a trucker who claimed to have seen Carlee’s car with the door open, and a grey vehicle pulled in front of it. They suspect the child might have been used as ‘bait’ to draw Carlee out of her car.
Hoover police are urging anyone with any information about this puzzling case to reach out to Det. Brad Fountain at 205-444-7562. As the community waits with bated breath, the intricate work of untangling this mystery continues.
