Oommen Chandy brief bio
Oommen Chandy was a veteran Indian politician and statesman who was born on 31 October 1943, in Kumarakom. He served as the 10th Chief Minister of Kerala from 2004 to 2006 and again from 2011 to 2016. He also served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Legislative Assembly from 2006 to 2011.
As a public leader, Chandy always maintained a very approachable relationship with his people. Under his “Janasambarka paripady” programme, he provided a platform where he could to listen to people’s complaints when he was the Chief Minister. The programme gained a lot of popularity among the common people.

According to his family, Oommen Chandy passed away in Bengaluru in the early hours of Tuesday. His son Chandy Oommen announced the death of his father in a Facebook post. Oommen wrote on his Facebook page, without any further details.

Following his death, the state government has announced a public holiday today as well as two days’ mourning. The decision comes as a mark of respect to the late former chief minister. Moreover, the Mahatma Gandhi University has also decided to cancel all the exams scheduled for 18 July.
Cause of death
According to Congress sources, the former CM died at a private hospital at around 4.25 am while undergoing cancer treatment. Reports state that Chandy had been suffering for a while now and was living in Bengaluru for treatment.

Oommen Chandy pursued his pre-university at CMS College, Kottayam and then he earned a B.A degree Economics. Chandy did his education at the St. George High School in Kottayam.
Chandy started out his political career by first representing Puthupally back in 1970 as the Youth Congress president. He eventually found his way up top to become a minister for the first time under the K Karunakaran cabinet back in 1977. Throughout his career, Chandy has represented Puthuppally constituency in Kottayam district as the MLA for over 50 years. Notably, he also set the record for the longest tenure in this regard.
Chandy served as the Minister of Labour from 11 April 1977 to 25 April 1977 and then again from 27 April 1977 – 27 October 1978. He then served as the Home minister from 28 December 1981-17 March 1982 and later as the Finance minister from 2 July 1991 to 22 June 1994. He served all of these posts in various governments under the leadership of K Karunakaran and A K Antony. Notably, Chandy also served as the Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Assembly.
Over time, Oommen Chandy became a very politician and eventually served as the chief minister of Kerala on two occasions. He served as the CM of Kerala for a total of seven years, with his first tenure from 2004–2006. His second tenure came again from 2011 to 2016.
