Thomas Abreu goes on a shooting spree

According to official reports, 25-year-old New York resident Thomas Abreu went on a shooting spree on Saturday, July 8. The shootings lasted for about 30 minutes and took place across six different locations. The string of shootings began in Cypress Hills, Brooklyn, and eventually reached Richmond Hill, Queens. Following the shootings, police officers identified Abreu as the suspect and took him into custody at around 1:10 pm. According to authorities, he was found with a 9 mm pistol along with an extended magazine.

Thomas Abreu facing multiple charges

According to the New York Police Department, Thomas Abreu now faces several charges due to his shooting spree. The charges include one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder, and six counts of criminal possession of a firearm. Moreover, Thomas Abreu was riding an unauthorized scooter with no license plate during the shooting.

He reportedly used the same weapon in all of the shootings. In addition to that, police informed that they haven’t found the serial number on the pistol and are still looking into it. Aaside from his current charges, the District Attorney’s office will decide on whether Thomas will face additional charges.

Multiple victims injured and one killed

According to news outlet CNN, Abreu fired at four people, including a 21-year-old-boy, a man aged 63, a 44-year-old man, and an 86-year-old man. The 63-year-old and the 21-year-old victims, were both shot in their shoulders and are currently in a stable condition. Meanwhile, the 44-year-old victim, who got shot in the face, is reportedly in a critical condition, and more information on his health is awaited.

However, the 86-year-old victim, Hamod Saeidi, was not so fortunate as he was declared dead at Jamaica Hospital. Saeidi was reportedly standing in front of a nail salon on Jamaica Avenue located near 109th Street in Queens during the time of the shooting. Abreu fired a single shot at him in the back.

Saeidi’s son, Alsaedi stated:

My heart is broken and my family, all devastated … We couldn’t believe what’s happening. We all work hard. We never have any problem, and look what happened to him. He ended up getting killed for no reason. I need justice … It’s not only us. There are some other victims that are looking for justice.”

Alsaedi further shared how his father was on his way to a mosque when he was shot.

Motive behind the shootings

As of now, police are still yet to reveal details behind the suspect’s motive. However, officials think that the suspect chose his victims at random.

Following the incident, Joseph Kenny, the current Assistant Chief of the NYPD’s Detective Bureau, told 1news:

We don’t know the motive. It seems that this is actually random. At this time, the video shows that he’s not targeting anybody, he’s not following anybody. As he’s driving on his scooter, he’s randomly shooting people.”
