Here is all you need to know about Assam’s first national cricketer Uma Chetry, her biography, age, career, family and more
The ODI and T20 teams for the Indian women’s cricket team’s upcoming tour of Bangladesh were just revealed by BCCI. On their trip of Bangladesh, India will play three T20Is and as many ODIs.
Richa Ghosh and Renuka Singh, two outstanding young wicketkeepers, were replaced by ‘uncapped’ Uma Chetry and Yastika Bhatia for both of the series. Uma, a 20-year-old cricket player from the Golaghat region of Assam, made history by being the first player from that state to be named to India’s national team. Both the T20 and ODI teams have named Uma in their teams.

The India A team, who most recently triumphed in the Asia Emerging Cricket Tournament, included Uma. Uma contributed significantly with the bat and in keeping in the two matches she participated in at that competition. Subhadeep Ghosh, a former Ranji player from Assam and the fielding coach for the women’s team, praised Uma as a fearless player and wished her luck in the future.
A look at Uma Chetry’s early life and family
Uma Chetry began playing cricket at her home in Bokakhat, which is part of Assam’s Golaghat region, when she was just a few years old. She imitated her older siblings, albeit indoors, while they played the sport on the village’s kutcha roads.
Uma would wheeze large round potatoes past unaware family members while hitting fours and sixes at will while using a stick as a makeshift bat. Her mother Dipa got her a toy bat and a ball when Uma turned three and made it a point to practise every day.
Her mother Uma told Sportstar:
We soon realised that she is fond of cricket. She would play with the local boys of her age and often discuss a thing or two with her elder brothers.”
In her daughter’s journey, Dipa will also have a big part to play. Lok Bahadur, Uma’s father, was a small-time farmer, thus there were times when the family, which included Uma and her four brothers, struggled to make ends meet. But the young wicketkeeper-batter didn’t let that stop her. Although not everyone in the hamlet agreed with her decision to play with guys, Dipa urged her daughter to pursue her interests.
It would frequently become late during the monsoon, so Dipa would ask her brother to bring up Uma from the training institute. Uma would work out for a while before going to Bokakhat Hindi High School, and after classes were finished, she would return to the ground and play with the lads. While the other two brothers of Uma reside in Assam, two of Uma’s brothers are security guards in Bengaluru. However, the family still has financial difficulties and essentially runs the show.
She drew Ajoy Sarma’s attention in about 2011, who is the Golaghat District Sports Association treasurer. Sarma pushed her case since she believed the girl had enough promise, and soon Uma was on the Assam Cricket Association’s radar.
She joined the Assam state squad in 2017 and continued to seize every chance she was given. She scored 194 runs in six one-day matches during the previous domestic season, averaging 32.33, while she scored 120 runs in five T20 innings, averaging 88.88. Uma was given a position in the India emerging team for the Emerging Asia Cup in Hong Kong thanks to her tenacious performance.

The 20-year-old scored an unbeaten 16 in the opening match of the just finished competition, which India won, and a 22 in the next contest. She was involved in four dismissals from behind the stumps, including two stumpings.
