Thanks to Gurpreet Singh Sandhu’s decisive penalty shootout save, hosts India emerged victorious in the 2023 SAFF Championship final, know the tournament winner prize money and awards winners list 

On Tuesday, India won their ninth SAFF Championship by defeating Kuwait 1-1 (5-4) in the final after a penalty shootout. Although Kuwait had many chances throughout the game, Indian defense remained stubborn and kept the game at 1-1 until the end of the extra-time. With this win, India have won their second title in as many months and will be eager to achieve further glory.

2023 SAFF Championship final India vs Kuwait winner, result, score, & goal scorers

Al Feneeni dribbled into the Indian half before cutting the ball back for an open Shabaib Al Khaldi in the box, who buried it past the Indian goalkeeper to give Kuwait a 1-0 lead. Later, Sunil Chhetri’s weighted through-ball reached Lallianzuala Chhangte, who buried it inside the goal to make it 1-1 and restore parity. To decide the 2023 SAFF Championship winner, penalty-shootout was required after regulation time concluded at a score of 1-1 and neither team could score in the extra-time. However, Kuwait’s captain Hajjeia missed the crucial penalty kick during the sudden death and allowed India to clinch the victory in their favor.

During the penalty shootout, Sunil Chhetri, Sandesh Jhingan, Lallianzuala Chhangte, & Subhashish Bose scored to guide India towards a comfortable position. Meanwhile, Mohammed Abdullah’s miss impact didn’t last long as Shabaib Alkhaldi, Abdulaziz Mahran, Fawaz Alotaibi, & Ahmad Aldhefeery converted their respective chances to force a sudden-death. In this stage, Naorem Mahesh converted his chance to build the pressure on Kuwait and later, Indian goalkeeper Gurpreet managed to stop the shot of Kuwait skipper Khaled Hajiah.

2023 SAFF Championship: prize money & final positions

Although the exact prize pool for the 2023 SAFF Championship is unknown, it is estimated that India will receive approximately INR 41 Lakhs for winning this prestigious tournament with them winning $50,000 while Kuwait were given $25,000.

For the 2023 SAFF Championship, Indian skipper has been recognized as the Golden Boot winner thanks to scoring most goals throughout the tournament. Additionally, he has received the Golden Ball award as the best player of the tournament. Meanwhile, Bangladeshi goalkeeper Anisur Rahman Zico has been rewarded with the best goalkeeper award.
