It doesn’t seem like the man who everyone wants to see in the derby is interested in playing, with the possible exception of anxious Angels supporters. On June 27, Shohei Ohtani blasted two more home runs and told reporters that his participation might depend on his future pitching schedule, which is still up in the air. He said:
“I don’t know when my next (pitching) start is and it really kind of depends on that. I haven’t thought that far ahead yet.”
The two-way star would likely prefer the extra rest, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register, who said he would be “very surprised” if he competed this year.
Seems to be unanimous that fans don’t want Ohtani in the HRD.
Don’t worry.
Based on his approach to the All-Star stuff last year, I would be very surprised if he does the Derby. I think he wants the rest. https://t.co/pEObbhM7uH

As of yet, only Julio Rodriguez of the Mariners has been confirmed to participate. It is not unexpected that Rodriguez is committed to the derby despite his bad season. A member of the host team is typically invited to the Seattle-based event. Rodriguez has additionally proven his ability to triumph in the past. He reached the championship round of the previous year’s derby before falling to Juan Soto.
Rodriguez won’t have to worry about travelling to a new city simply to participate, which is different from many players who only take part in the Home Run Derby if they are chosen for the All-Star Game. At T-Mobile Park, he will have the opportunity to compete for his first derby championship.

But another potential participant has already been revealed. Mookie Betts, a star for the Dodgers, declared that if he is chosen as an All-Star, he will take part in the Home Run Derby. Betts is a finalist for the National League’s outfield starting and is very certainly going to be selected even if he isn’t voted in, so his participation in the derby looks almost assured.
You heard it here first!
