Mateo Kovacic signs for Manchester City

Manchester City have finally secured the signing of Croatian international Mateo Kovacic for a £30m deal. The two clubs have agreed on a deal, which includes an initial £25m fee, plus £5m in add-ons. Pep Guardiola is reportedly a huge fan of the Chelsea midfielder and has kept a close eye on him ever since his Real Madrid days.

Kovacic signed a 5 year / £39,000,000 contract with the Chelsea F.C., including an annual average salary of £7,800,000. His salary at Man City isn’t known yet.

Mateo Kovacic at Chelsea

Mateo Kovacic initially joined Chelsea on loan back in 2019 from Los Blancos. He eventually signed a five-year permanent contract with the Blues. Kovacic has so far made about 142 Premier League appearances with the Blues. This season he featured 37 times for Chelsea but made just 17 starts. Kovacic has won the Champions League and Europa League once, as well as a UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup with Chelsea.

“The best technically is Mateo Kovacic”

Back in a recent interview, former Chelsea teammate Kai Havertz who himself will join Arsenal this summer shared some praise about Kovacic. When asked who is the most skilful at Chelsea, the Germany international, said:

The best technically is Mateo Kovacic”

He further added:

I suppose he doesn’t use many skills in-game. That is Joao Felix, I’d say. Hakim Ziyech is the one who always tries to nutmeg.”

Kovacic role at Man City

Pep is keen on signing a new midfielder with German veteran Ilkay Gundogan set to leave the club during the summer transfer window. The 33-year-old was included on Man City’s released players list. He is also still yet to agree on new terms with the club and is most unlikely to.

Moreover, Kalvin Phillips’ future at the club is also uncertain. The English midfielder has failed to secure a starting place in Guardiola’s squad ever since joining from Leeds United. Man City were also keen on signing West Ham skipper Declan Rice, but still haven’t submitted any formal bid. The England international is most likely to join Arsenal.

As such, Kovacic looks like a perfect fit considering all these players set to leave and failed transfer targets. Moreover, with Pep having a keen interest on the Croatian for several years now, he will likely get game time.
