2022-23 UEFA Europa League final Sevilla vs Roma winner, result, score, & goal scorers
Despite missing Roma’s previous four games owing to his ankle injury, Argentinian star Paulo Dybala was selected in the starting line-up by José Mourinho. Dybala quickly rewarded the manager’s faith by converting his chance in the 35th minute, when he calmly slotted his finish past Bounou. After falling behind in the match, Sevilla switched their playstyle and began attacking relentlessly. However, Roma’s dependable defense was quickly exposed when 37-year-old Jess Navas sent in a right-wing cross that Mancini could only parry into his own net while being pressed by Lucas Ocampos.
For the remaining period of the regular time, the score remained 1-1 as neither of the teams were able to finish their opportunities. In the extra-time, none of the goalkeepers were tested with both teams struggling to build proper chances and hence, the game went to penalties. In the shootout, Bounou played up to his reputation by stopping Mancini’s shot with his legs and tucking Ibaez’s penalty kick against the post. To assure Sevilla won the title for a record seventh time, Gonzalo Montiel, who scored the winning penalty for Argentina in the World Cup final, swept in a retaken attempt.
