Here is all you need to know about Akash Madhwal who ‘engineered’ Lucknow Super Giant’s exit from IPL 2023 along with his education and engineering college

Mumbai Indians’ surprising 81-run victory over Lucknow Super Giants in the Eliminator featured Akash Madhwal as the team’s star performer.

Throughout the 16.3 overs that Mumbai Indians bowled on Wednesday night, it didn’t feel like they were lacking their star pacer Jasprit Bumrah.

In IPL 2023, Akash Madhwal ‘engeered’ the kind of bowling that Bumrah had accustomed MI and India fans to in order to keep the five-time champions in the game.

Right-arm pacer Madhwal, 29, of Roorkee, bowled 21 of the 16.3 overs to assist MI in chasing down 182/8 by destroying the Lucknow Super Giants for 101 runs.

Madhwal struck five knockout blows in those 21 balls. A perfect delivery that pitched and left the southpaw just enough to cause a drive and find the edge claimed Nicholas Pooran for a golden duck. Madhwal almost refused to concede any runs throughout the spell, concluding with figures of 5/5, which is practically unheard of in any game style.

Few people were familiar with Akash Madhwal until his heroics for MI this season. So, the following are some things you should know about him:

Who is Akash Madhwal?

Uttarakhand native Akash Madhwal was the first member of his hometown to participate in the Indian Premier League.

After completing his primary and secondary education at Roorkee Public Senior Secondary School in Uttarakhand, Madhwal went on to pursue a degree in civil engineering in 2016 from the College of Engineering Roorkee, which he successfully graduated from.

Akash Madhwal watched his neighbour Rishabh, now known as ‘Rishabh Pant’

Madhwal observed his neighbour Rishabh, who was raised in a middle-class household in Roorkee, Uttarakhand, devote a lot of time and effort to his training. After receiving his engineering degree, Rishabh played tennis-ball cricket with his friends while Madhwal observed him play with the hard ball.

Madhwal was inspired to try his hand at professional cricket in the period between 2013 and 2014 after seeing Rishabh work out with coach Avtar Singh. Rishabh would then go for Delhi and settle there shortly after.

Madhwal would learn that his neighbour was destined for greatness until much later. He would introduce himself as Rishabh Pant, the young guy he had always known as Rishabh.

While Pant moved to Delhi to further his cricket career, Madhwal stayed in Roorkee to try to take advantage of Pant’s later foray into the sport. When Uttarakhand announced senior team trials in their second year of operation in 2019, that was the turning point.

A look at Akash Madhwal’s early life and career so far

In the UAE section of the season in 2021, Madhwal played as a backup bowler for Royal Challengers Bangalore. He had been told that there may be a chance if there were an injury or a Covid case.

Even though that situation didn’t arise, Madhwal, who had only been working two years before as a planning engineer at a construction company with headquarters in Dehradun, thought he had succeeded in his mission. After all, he did bowl to Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers.

Malolan Rangarajan, a talent scout, advised Madhwal to go there. Rangarajan had first met him when he was working as a professional for Uttarakhand in the team’s debut season after joining the BCCI in 2018–19. Two years later, when he came back as a scout, he remembered being astounded by Madhwal’s deceptive pace and rapid arm movements.

It turns out that he was being watched by many teams than just RCB. CKM Dhananjay, the video analyst for the Mumbai Indians, was really impressed when he saw Madhwal bowl at the Abhimanyu Cricket Academy in Dehradun.

Akash Madhwal was born on 25 November 1993 in Roorkee, Uttarakhand and his father’s name is Ghana Nand, and he used to work in the MES wing of the Army in Roorkee while his mother Asha is a housewife.

He had also received feedback from Anand Rajan, a former seamer for Madhya Pradesh who is now the bowling coach for Uttarakhand.

When Madhwal’s physical condition was at its best, he began sharpening his abilities and kept working out at Reliance’s facility. The team management opted to recruit him as Suryakumar Yadav’s replacement in the middle of the IPL 2022 season after he attained their satisfaction. At that time, he had 15 wickets from 15 T20 games.

Prior to the 2022 season, Madhwal was chosen as Uttarakhand’s T20 captain for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. His ability to adapt and take charge of a squad that had previously garnered attention for its association politics quickly earned him the respect of his players.
