Russell Martin departs for Southampton.
Russell Martin, the head coach of Swansea City, will take over as Southampton’s next manager as the Saints attempt to recover from their Premier League relegation. Rubens Selles is replaced by the 37-year-old, and some of Martin’s Swansea coaching staff are anticipated to join him at Southampton.
Swansea is receiving compensation from Southampton for Martin and his staff, whose contracts are valid through 2024, in the amount of almost £400,000. Martin was scheduled to travel to the US last week to meet with Swansea’s American ownership group to discuss his future, but the trip has been postponed. No new deal was made despite his apparent desire to extend his stay.
The journey of Martin
Martin, a former captain of Norwich City, signed a three-year deal after leaving MK Dons in August 2021 to take Steve Cooper’s place as Swansea’s manager. He led Swansea from 15th place in his first Championship season to 10th place in the recently concluded season.
Swansea had a great start to the season, climbing as high as fourth in October before their form started to decline. They finished 2022–23 with a nine-game winning run. His team’s possession-based style of play is thought to have impressed Southampton’s management.
