On Tuesday, the local media announced the demise of La Tota.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino wrote a heartfelt condolence letter for the player. He said, “It was with great sadness that we came to know about the sad demise of the first player to star in five FIFA World Cups, Antonio Carbajal. I send our sincere condolences to his family and to all the Mexican fans who are mourning his loss.”

Antonia Carbajal was born on June 7th, 1929 in the Mexico City. He died at the age of 93.

The Career of Antonio Carbajal

The goalie participated in competitions held in Brazil in 1950, Switzerland in 1954, Sweden in 1958, Chile in 1962, and England in 1966, among others. Before Lothar Matthaus of Germany tied Carbajal’s record in 1998, it had been held by him for 32 years. He had 409 club appearances in addition to 48 national team caps, 11 of which were at World Cups.

From 1948 to 1966, he spent 18 years playing for his club, and from 1950 to 1966, he spent 48 years playing for the international squad. After he hung up his boots in 1995, his love affair with the sport lasted an additional 26 years, from 1969 to 1995.

At the club level, he made 409 professional appearances. He played in 364 games over a 16-year period at León, where he spent the majority of his career. Additionally, he participated in 45 games for Club Espaa. He oversaw 722 games, including a decade with Atlético de Morelia from 1985 to 1995.

For the Mexican National Team, he took part in 48 national team contests.

He made his international debut against Brazil in the first match of the 1950 FIFA World Cup. He took part in Mexico’s historic victory over Czechoslovakia in the 1962 FIFA World Cup in Chile. In total, he took part in 11 FIFA World Cup games.
