Singapore will play top seeds and gold medal favourites Indonesia in the semifinals of the men’s team badminton sport at the 32nd Southeast Asian Games in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

That comes after Loh Kean Yew, the 2021 men’s singles world champion, took the initiative to help his side defeat the Philippines 3-1 in the competition’s opening round on Monday, May 8.

In the first 32 minutes of the match, Loh, who recently took home the silver medal at the Badminton Asia Championships, overcame Jewel Angelo Albo in straight games.

When Christian Bernardo and Alvin Morada defeated the Singaporeans in the second round 14-21, 15-21, Loh’s brother Kean Hean and doubles partner Andy Kwek quickly regained the advantage. Teh easily outclassed Lance Gabriel Vargas, winning 21-11 21-11.

Terry Hee and Nge Joo Jie, Singapore’s second doubles pair, battled courageously to win the match overall with a 13-21 21-19 21-18 victory despite falling behind to Solomon Padiz Jr. and Julius Villabrille very immediately.

With only seven teams competing in the men’s team event, Indonesia got a bye to the semifinals and will rest up for Wednesday’s encounter.

After defeating Vietnam 3-0, the Singaporean women’s team moved on to the round of four.

They will face off against a tough Thailand squad on Wednesday, which includes doubles world No. 9 Jongkolphan Kititharakul/Rawinda Prajongjai.

The best athletes in this competition will compete in the BWF Sudirman Cup (the world mixed team championships) in Suzhou, People’s Republic of China, after the team matches, leaving less accomplished players to compete in the solo events.
