Although the 32nd Southeast Asian Games begin today with the opening ceremony, Cambodian athletes have already brought joy to the nation by winning five gold medals, including one in jiu-jitsu and four so far in the Kun Bokator competition as competitions progress.

On Thursday, May 4, the night before the Opening Ceremony, the first medals were given out, officially kicking off the Southeast Asian Games 2023. Kong Mona Pithora and Touch Pikada’s victory in the men’s artistic duo jiujitsu category, where Thailand won silver and Vietnam and the Philippines split bronze, delighted Cambodia. The pair Jiu-Jitsu division of the Southeast Asian Games is being introduced for the first time by Cambodia.
In the Ne-waza Nogi -52kg competition, Kaila Napolis of the Philippines took home the gold medal, while Jessa Khan of the inaugural hosts Cambodia took home the silver. A major fan favorite, Khan tried her hardest to defeat Napolis in a rivalry match in which the standings from the -49kg class at the 2019 SEA Games were reversed. Khan appeared to be in control until the very last second, but Napolis prevailed this time with a 2-0 victory in the championship. The home crowd was quieted by Napolis’ last-second sweep, and they will be hoping that Khan wins her second competition on Sunday in the NOGI -52kg division.
Ahead of the opening ceremony on Friday, total of 36 medals were dished out and unsurprisingly, hosts Cambodia have dominated so far with 9 medals including 5 gold medals. Meanwhile, Philippines sit second with 7 medals including 2 golds and will be optimistic to bag more medals throughout Day 2.
