List of the biggest fights in IPL history

1 Gambhir vs Kohli

In IPL 2013, Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli were involved in an infamous fight during a match between KKR and RCB. The incident occurred at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore, where Kohli was dismissed for 35 by Lakshmipathy Balaji.

The dismissed batter engaged in a conversation with KKR’s fielders, and things heated up when Kolkata skipper Gambhir charged toward Kohli. A war of words followed, and Kohli eventually walked off in a huff.

2 When MS Dhoni lost his cool

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni is often referred to as ‘captain cool,’ but even he loses his temper at times. During the 2019 IPL edition, Chennai took on the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Jaipur. Chasing 152, Dhoni was out on the third ball of the last over, and there was massive confusion on the fourth ball when a no-ball was given on height but later revoked.

Dhoni stormed out to the middle and had an argument with the umpires, but it all ended well for CSK as they secured a win on the last ball.

3 No-ball controversy

During IPL 2022, a significant no-ball controversy emerged when Delhi Capitals (DC) played against Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. In the final over, DC required 36 runs, and Rovman Powell hit the first two deliveries from Obed McCoy for sixes.

The third delivery hit over the boundary, but it was a high full-toss. Powell asked the umpires to review it for a no-ball, but they declined. The umpire’s decision infuriated captain Rishabh Pant, who gestured to his batters to leave the field in protest, and all-rounder Shardul Thakur was also agitated. Eventually, sanity prevailed, and the game carried on, with RR winning by 15 runs.

4 Pollard threw bat at Starc

Another heated incident occurred during the IPL 2014 match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. In the 17th over of MI’s innings, left-arm seamer Mitchell Starc bowled a bouncer at Kieron Pollard, which the batsman attempted to hook but missed. Starc had something to say to Pollard, which led to a heated argument between the two.

On the next ball, Pollard backed out as Starc ran to bowl, but the seamer completed his delivery and bowled one at Pollard’s legs. Angry Pollard threw his bat at Starc, but luckily, it missed the Australian pacer as it slipped out of Pollard’s hand and fell towards the leg side.

5 Slapgate

During the first edition of IPL in 2008, a significant controversy took place, marking it as the first of its kind in the tournament’s history. Harbhajan Singh, representing Mumbai Indians (MI), was involved in an altercation with Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) bowler S. Sreesanth after a game in Mohali. The incident, which is often referred to as ‘Slapgate’, created a massive uproar.

In a video that went viral, tearful Sreesanth was seen crying after being slapped by Harbhajan. The incident resulted in a major controversy, and Harbhajan was banned for the remainder of IPL 2008. He has since expressed regret over the incident, and in his latest YouTube video, he recalled “Slapgate” while discussing the Kohli-Gambhir altercation.
