A Peterborough United fan was detained in the middle of the match when a video showed him spitting at players from Ipswich Town who were celebrating
The event happened during Peterborough’s League One game against Ipswich. Both teams had a reason to win the game: the host team wanted to keep their hopes of qualifying for the playoffs, and the visitors desired automatic promotion.
Wes Burns opened the scoring for Ipswich after 17 minutes, raising his hands in celebration as the players advanced towards the Peterborough supporters.
In front of parents and kids who were watching in shock, a man was heard swearing as he got up from his seat and appeared to lean in and spit on Burns.
Peterborough tweeted that the suspected supporter had been arrested by the police as the game went on.
The statement read:
The football club can confirm that a gentleman was arrested by police following an incident after the first goal scored by Ipswich Town this afternoon.”
It further said that these kinds of incidents have no place in the game. The club would like to express its gratitude to the police for responding promptly.

With a 3-0 victory, Ipswich eliminated Peterborough from the play-off positions and moved closer to the Championship.
Kieran Mckenna’s team retained their second-place position by putting on a dominant performance right away, extending their unbeaten League One streak to 16 games.
Nathan Broadhead’s shot was blocked by Will Norris, and Wes Burns was the first to respond and get the rebound.
As the players were celebrating an Ipswich goal, a fan spit on them and was quickly arrested.
When Ephron Mason-Clark’s close-range shot tested Christian Walton’s answer, Posh began to come to life. They again posed a threat in the second half, when League One’s top scorer Jonson Clarke Harris’ ferocious shot was blocked.
Conor Chaplin, the second-most productive player in this league, extended Ipswich’s advantage with his 23rd League One goal of the year. Broadhead completed with his left hand after passing by him.
Freddie Ladapo, an 82nd-minute substitute, scored Ipswich’s third goal by controlling the ball with his chest and volleying it into the corner.
