2023 FIDE World Chess Championship Round 8 result, match events, Round 9 schedule, date, time, venue, & format
A superhuman effort from GM Ian Nepomniachtchi led to a draw in the eighth round of the 2023 FIDE World Chess Championship, just falling short of the stunning comeback that GM Ding Liren almost achieved following his heartbreaking round-seven loss. In yet another opening debut for the competition, the competitors sparred their way through an unbalanced Nimzo-Indian Defense middlegame before Ding took advantage of Nepomniachtchi’s mistake under pressure.
Ding came close to winning the game but, his opponent’s persistent efforts meant Game 8 ended in a tie. Following Thursday’s result, Ian Nepomniachtchi is leading 4.5-3.5 with momentum in his favor as he will play with white pieces on Friday. Meanwhile, Ding will have to be cautious and avoid defeat that might cause major setback to his title quest. Notably, Thursday’s result was the first tie after four decisive results in favor of player with white pieces.
