While it is wonderful to see many of the original cast members return—they haven’t missed a beat since the series premiered in 1993—the special ends with a heartbreaking tribute to those we have lost.

Originally, Netflix’s 30th-anniversary special was going to honour the late actress, but Frank, who played the original Green Ranger Tommy Oliver, also had to be honoured after his sudden death in November 2022.

Trang tragically died in a car accident in 2001 at the age of 27, and Frank died in a purported suicide at the age of 49 in 2022.

A Tribute To Former Power Rangers From Once & Always

The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always episode ended, and the screen faded to black before switching to a screen with the original Power Rangers performing “Down the Road.”

Tommy Oliver, the Green Power Ranger, was honoured in the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers season two episode 11 from September 1994 with the singing of this song by Kimberly and Zach.

“Once A Ranger, Always A Ranger”

The words “Once a Ranger, Always a Ranger” is displayed beneath images of Thuy Trang and Jason David Frank as the video fades out.

The Power Rangers Fandom website notes that old recordings of Trang and Frank’s voices were used in situations involving the Yellow and Green Rangers as part of the Once & Always homage to both of them.

The song’s lyrics are heartbreaking when viewed in the context of Once & Always.

“We never know what life has in store for us in the future.”

More than previously, the winds of change will reshape our lives.

But, my friend, you’ll never be by yourself.

Memories endure forever.

They will always be alive in our hearts, and we will never say goodbye.

Power Rangers: Once & Always Moves Ahead By Honouring The Legacy

For Once & Always, the Power Rangers required a fresh viewpoint.

While TV reunions are incredibly popular with viewers everywhere, paying homage to the series and giving the Power Rangers a new look was the appropriate move.

According to Zach Taylor’s actor, Walter Emanuel Jones, “Our Ranger family runs deep” even after 30 years. Billy Cranston’s actor David Yost would add that it was “amazing” to rejoin the original ensemble, saying, “It was such a surreal experience to be on the set of Power Rangers again after 28 years.”

Ron Wasserman, a composer of the original Power Rangers, explained to ScreenRant that the group’s return brought a new style to the franchise, and this was crucial to a successful reunion.

He said, “Coming back to this would have been strange if it had been told in the original series’ narrative manner, but this is a more complex movie-like episode or short film.” It didn’t feel awkward at all since it kind of felt like something completely new that just so happened to have the Power Rangers.”

He further added that “everything I scored around the movie was more mature,” and that throughout the duration of the franchise’s existence, he even got over 105,000 messages from fans.

“I respond to each and every one because, when I was younger, a keyboard player for the band Chicago wrote me and a friend a letter, and they exchanged letters. I thought, “I will always be available if anyone wants my time or to ask me a question.” and I have continued to do it.”
