Grigor Dimitrov, a tennis player from Bulgaria, was the latest high-profile person to be robbed in Barcelona as his watch was mugged
A group of muggers on a motorbike stole Grigor Dimitrov’s expensive watch, which was worth £62,560. The fight happened on a busy street in the Spanish city as Dimitrov was coming home from training the day before the Barcelona Open tennis event.
Locals say that the bad guys were following Grigor Dimitrov on a motorbike before they attacked him on the Avenida de Sarria street. A male passenger on the motorbike pushed Dimitrov’s wing mirror in, then grabbed his watch when he tried to open it with his hand.

Grigor Dimitrov, who has dated Maria Sharapova and singer Nicole Scherzinger and won eight singles titles on the ATP Tour, went to the police on Friday night to make a statement. The police haven’t caught the muggers yet, but they think they are professional thieves from Naples, Italy, who use fake IDs to come to Spain and commit crimes.
Barcelona’s high-profile thefts continue
After a string of high-profile thefts in Barcelona, such as the theft of Formula 1 driver Sebastian Vettel’s backpack and Barcelona footballer Robert Lewandowski’s watch, this theft is the latest.

Last year, someone stole a bag from Vettel’s Aston Martin when he briefly stepped out, and another individual took Lewandowski’s watch while he signed autographs before an evening training session in August.
In the past few years, because of the rise in these kinds of crimes, security in Barcelona has been in the spotlight. In answer, the city has added more police, but these kinds of things keep happening.
Theft in Barcelona raises concerns about rising crime rates
Grigor Dimitrov has won more prize money than any other Bulgarian player. He became the No. 3 player in the world when he won the ATP Finals in November 2017. He has made it to the semi-finals of three of the four Grand Slams. In 2014, at Wimbledon, he lost to Novak Djokovic, who went on to win the tournament.
The theft of Grigor Dimitrov’s watch is a warning that crime is getting worse in Barcelona and that people need to be careful when they are out in public. The cops are still looking into what happened, and hopefully the people who did it will be caught soon.
