On April 15, Jackie Robinson Day was held by Major League Baseball (MLB) to honour the first African-American star in the league, know his cause of death and wife
Robinson made history after playing first game for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. He was the first black player in MLB’s current era.
This year marks 50 years since Robinson’s first show. In honour of the event, every player, manager, and coach wore a patch with the number 42 on it. Also former baseball commissioner Bud Selig started the Jackie Robinson Day events in 2004. Since then, they have been held every year.

Remembering Jackie Robinson’s life and family
Robinson passed away at his home in North Stamford, Connecticut, on October 24, 1972. He had turned 53. A heart attack was the cause of death. Robinson had gotten over one in 1968, and diabetes had caused him to lose the sight in one eye and part of the sight in the other.
Rachel Robinson, who is now 100 years old, was married to Robinson. She is a business leader, an activist for human rights, a teacher, and a nurse. They got married in 1946 and had three kids: David Robinson, Jackie Robinson Jr., and Sharon. Robinson played baseball for the Kansas City Monarchs in 1945. From 1947 to 1956, he played for the Brooklyn Dodgers. He played first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers.
Jackie Robinson’s legacy beyond Baseball
Robinson was known for what he did both on the pitch and off of it. He had to deal with a lot of racism and prejudice. But his determination and strength helped break down obstacles for people who came after him. Robinson’s famous quotes, such as “I’m not concerned with your liking or disliking me…all I ask is that you respect me as a human being,” and “A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives,” continue to inspire people around the world.
Every year, MLB celebrates Jackie Robinson Day to honour his memory and show how important it is to break down barriers and fight for equality. Rachel Robinson said, “We need Jackie Robinson’s voice more than ever, and the work of the Jackie Robinson Foundation is just as important now as it was when it started 50 years ago.”
