Reports say that during Owen’s qualifying run for the race, he drifted high into Turn 3, lost control, and crashed into the wall. Then, his car turned over several times before stopping in the middle of the track. After the accident, USAC quickly put a red flag on the race, and 30 minutes later, the series said the event was off. Owen died from his injuries later that night, which was very sad.

Justin Owen was a rising star in sprint car racing. He was born and raised in Harrison, Ohio. At the Dick Gaines Memorial at the end of the season before, he won the title at Lawrenceburg. This was one of his biggest wins on the track.
