Gujarat Titans began their title-defense campaign in IPL 2023 with a five-wicket victory over the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Friday.
However, the defending champions are set to suffer a major setback after skipper Hardik Pandya provided an update on Kane Williamson, who suffered a knee injury while fielding against CSK.
Williamson made a massive leap near the boundary rope in an attempt to save a boundary during the 13th over of the first innings of the IPL 2023 season opener. As he went over the rope, he grabbed the ball in the air and quickly threw it back into play.

However, as the ball rolled back to the boundary for a four, Williamson landed awkwardly on his right foot, injuring his knee.
As the match was being stopped, the 32-year-old fell down and clinched his knee in pain. The physios rushed in and carried him to the dressing room, where he did not return. B Instead, Sai Sudharsan was assigned as a substitute fielder and later replaced Williamson in the Titans’ starting lineup under the Impact Player rule.
Speaking about the injury after GT’s five-wicket victory, Hardik stated that the management is currently awaiting scan reports.
In the post-match conference, Pandya said that “It is knee (injury) for sure but I don’t have any update about what exactly has happened. I don’t know how serious the injury is and how much time it will take (to heal). Right now there is no time frame.”
Meanwhile, New Zealand head coach Gary Stead is concerned about Williamson’s injury as well. In an conversation with Williamson, Stead said that “Our first thoughts are obviously with him, we’re not sure at this stage of the severity of the injury. He’s being assessed in the next 24-48 hours, so we will know more after that.”
After the incident Stead found him in “OK” spirits. According to a report by stuff.co.nz, who quoted Stead “All we know at this stage is it’s his right knee. Unfortunately I can’t give you much more than that now until we find out more information.”
While nothing has been officially revealed regarding the injury and his return, SportsTak has claimed that Williamson has been ruled out of the IPL.
Let us remind you, in the last season of IPL, Williamson handled the responsibility of Sunrisers Hyderabad as an captain of the team. He was purchased by the GT for this season at a price of Rs. 2 Crore during the IPL 2023 auction.
The 32-year-old recently recovered from an elbow injury that had plagued him for the previous two years and forced him to miss many New Zealand games.
