Rahul Gandhi was convicted by a Gujarat court in relation to his ‘Modi surname’ comments. He had made remarks at a rally in Karnataka’s Kolar when he was campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections of 2019. A case had been registered against him and it was filed by former Gujarat minister and BJP MLA Purnesh Modi.

This case has been filed as Rahul Gandhi said, “how come all the thieves have Modi as a common surname?” this complaint against Rahul Gandhi was lodged by a BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister, Purnesh Modi.
The member of Lok Sabha from Wayanad made alleged remarks while he was addressing a rally at the Kolar which is Karnataka ahead of the Lok Sabha elections 2019.

Purnesh Modi hails from the Adajan area of Surat in Gujarat and he lives with his family. Purnesh won the by-election for the 13th Legislative Assembly held in the state of Gujarat, 2013 to 2017 after the death of the then MLA Kishore Bhai.
Later on, Purnesh came up as BJP’s candidate for assembly by-polls of 2017, which was won by him. In an interview, Purnesh said, it was a bid to defame lakhs of families with the Modi surname. He has filed the complaint as sentiments of crores of people are hurt by Rahul Gandhi’s comment.’
Purnesh Modi grew up in poverty and when he was young, he worked as a tea seller. In 1992, he completed his LLB degree and then joined a law firm. He has been an MLA for 3 terms and he is BJP’s OBC face from Surat. He has worked in the tourism, aviation, and transport departments for the Indian government.
