Julian Nagelsmann brief bio

Julian Nagelsmann is a German professional football coach and manager who started out as a footballer. He was born on 23 July 1987 in Landsberg am Lech, Germany and is currently 35 years old.

Nagelsmann initially started out his career in football, as a player at Augsburg B team under Tuchel. When he was just a 20-year-old future prospect player, Nagelsmann suffered a career-ending knee injury.

Since Nagelsmann was unable to continue playing, Tuchel tasked him with scouting opponents and writing up analysis. Thus, his coaching career eventually began from there and he is currently one of the most talented young coaches.

Julian Nagelsmann preferred tactics and formations

Similar to other German managers like Jürgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel, Nagelsmann also takes inspiration from Ralf Rangnick’s famous pressing philosophy. Interestingly, Tuchel, who will replace Nagelsmann at Bayern, was who initially helped Nagelsmann get into coaching.

Nagelsmann is famous for having revolutionized German football with his exciting and unique tactical approach. His skills and understanding of the game have seen him become the youngest coach-ever to manage a side in the Champions League Semi-Final while working at RB Leipzig.

Nagelsmann’s preferred formation is a 4-2-3-1 formation, and encourages players to focus on overloading the centre of the pitch. The players do this with minimal width, which helps his side box the opponents inside.

In simple terms, his teams are narrow, but press high to help retain the ball back quickly on losing possession. This is possible as his players don’t go too far away from the action. However, Nagelsmann doesn’t always stick to this formation or playing style. In fact, the 35-year-old is a very bright coach with the ability to adapt his system based on the opposition.

One of the best examples was Bayern’s last match on Sunday against Bayer Leverkusen. Nagelsmann adopted a unique 3-1-4-2 formation, which helped his side win 2-1. Besides that, he has also previously used a 3-5-2 shape, or a 5-3-2 formation when defending a lead.

Nagelsmann won 60 of his 84 games in charge of Bayern (71.4 per cent), having joined the club in July 2021 and in that time he has claimed one Bundesliga trophy and two German Super Cups.

Nagelsmann tactics at Spurs

If Nagelsmann does indeed join Tottenham, Spurs fans should seem him initially start using his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation and the high pressing against opposing teams. He could instruct his players to start narrowly without the ball before eventually expanding once they win back possession.
