What was there in the video?

In the video, Jenkins can be seen sitting on a chair while being recorded by an unnamed prisoner. Jenkins simulates an oral sex act by sucking on the man’s index finger at the end of the brief footage.

The 36-year-old is accused of more than a dozen charges for engaging in inappropriate sexual activity with an inmate. Jenkins is accused of two counts of inappropriate sexual contact by an employee or agent, five counts of a public official breaking the law, two counts of reckless behaviour, two counts of inmate maltreatment, and one count of providing an inmate with a forbidden item without permission.

Fulton County officials respond to the accusations.

Fulton County Sheriff Patrick Labat denounced Kawana Jenkins’ behaviour in a statement to the media. Labat stated, “I am committed to transparency and to holding each and every employee responsible to the oath they have made to protect and serve our community. The members of the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office do not, in any way, embody this one person’s acts. The vast majority of employees deserve praise for their moral character, dedication to duty, and daily labour.”

Jenkins, who had worked for the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office since December 2019, made an appearance this week and was later given a bond. This is not shocking at all. This sometimes occurs in all-male jails with female guards who aren’t particularly attractive. She simply made a mistake by recording it, which is why she was fired and arrested.

Relationships between jail staff and prisoners

Although the alleged affair involving Kawana Jenkins stunned the community, connections between prisoners and jail staff are nothing uncommon.

The most well-known instance of unlawful contact between an officer and an inmate took place in 2015 at the Clinton Correctional Institution in New York. Prison guards Joyce Mitchell and Richard Matt and David Sweat allegedly had a romantic relationship, and she allegedly assisted their escape. For her involvement in the incident, Joyce Mitchell received a 7-year sentence.
