Echo Quan met Ke Huy Quan on sets of 2046 in Hong Kong. Echo earlier worked for Hong Kong movie director Wong Kar-Wai, and Ke Huy was working for stunt choreographer Corey Yeun. In 2046, Ke served as an assistant director.

Ke Huy Quan went on to work with the action choreographer Corey Yuen on movies such as X-Men. The actor is trained in martial arts and was an assistant director in 2046 which was a lavish romance by Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai. Wong was a cupid between Ke and Echo.
The duo lives in Los Angeles and has been together for 22 years after Wong first suggested they should date.

In one other tweet, Daniels wrote, “Inspired by the real-life of the Kwan family we came up with the regional backstories for characters. Grandpa speaks Cantonese. Mom and dad speak mandarin to each other.โ
