DY Chandrachud, who succeeded CJI UU Lalit had administered his oath last year as the 50th Chief Justice of India, know his tenure and retirement date

For those who are unfamiliar with the CJI, let us tell you, DY whose full name is Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra, on November 11, 1959.

Prior to being the Chief Justice of India, he has served the position of Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court and former judge of the Bombay High Court.

Succeeding the CJI UU Lalit, Justice DY Chandrachud administered oath as the 50th Chief Justice of India on 9 November, 2022. He was administered the oath by President Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

He was preceded by former CJI, UU Lalit, who served a short tenure of 74 days and CJI DY Chandrachud will serve till 10 November, 2024 as the retirement age of Supreme Court judges is 65 years.

If you’re unsure, let us make it clear, Dhananjaya, is son of India’s longest serving Chief Justice, Y.V. Chandrachud, and Prabha, who was a classical musician, who sang for All India Radio.

Chandrachud has completed his schooling from the Cathedral and John Connon School, Mumbai. After completing his studies, he got admitted in Delhi University’s St. Stephen College as he got enrolled in economics and mathematics in 1979.

Later he obtained a degree of Bachelor’s of Laws from the Faculty of Law in 1982 from Delhi University and went to pursue a master’s degree in law from Harvard University in 1983.

After successfully completing his education from Delhi University as well as Harvard University before practicing for Sullivan & Cromwell and in Bombay High Court.

After practicing at the High Court of Bombay, he become a judge there and then the Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court. DY has been a part of several important benches that has delivered a number of landmark judgements including likes of Ram Janmabhoomi verdict, Privacy verdict, decriminalization of homosexuality and Sabarimala case.

The 63-year-old has also visited the various universities as a professor such as Mumbai, Oklahoma, Harvard, Yale among many more.

He has given lecture at various national universities such as Australian National University, Deakin University, Melbourne Law School, Harvard Law School, Yale Law School, the William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawai‘I and the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa.

Apart from being the CJI, Chandrachud is also the Chairperson of the e-Committee of the Apex Court.

For those who are unversed about the e-Committee, let us tell you, it’s a body tasked with the implement of the e-Courts Projects in the nation, which aims to digitise the judiciary at the district courts as well as high courts level.
