In India, heart attacks are the main cause of death. Ischemic heart disease (IHD) killed about 2.8 million people in India in 2016, according to a study in The Lancet. The study also found that the age-adjusted rate of IHD in India has gone up by 59% in the last 20 years.
Experts say that the rise in heart disease is caused by a number of things, such as a bad diet, being too lazy, smoking, and stress.

The pandemic has also caused more heart attacks to happen in the country. A recent study in the Indian Heart Journal found that the number of people in India who had heart attacks went up during the COVID-19 pandemic. This could be because people waited longer to get medical help or changed their habits during lockdowns.
Indian government doing its best to find the solution
The government of India has started a number of programmes to try to stop the rise of Heart Attack. In 2018, the government started the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke (NPCDCS) to raise awareness about heart disease and encourage healthy habits.
To lower the risk of heart disease, the government has also told people to do more physical activities like walking, cycling, and playing sports.
