Elangovan in Erode East
Thirumahan who was the son of Elangovan died due to a cardiac arrest at the age of 46 years in 2023.
Elangovan, who is a well-known former Union minister and also a former Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president, was initially unwilling to contest the by-election. However, the All India Congress Committee has declared his name as a candidate.
Elangovan, who is the son of E V K Sampath and grandson of Periyar E V Ramasamy’s brother Krishnasamy was born on 21 December 1948. Later on, he joined the congress and he competed in 1984, Tamil Nadu assembly elections from the Sathyamanglam constituency and won.
He also served as the MP for the Gobichettipalayam parliament constituency between 2004 and 2009 in the UPA -1 government. Earlier in 2009, he lost to MDMK. In Erode constituency in 2019 he lost to O P Ravindra Nath Kumar in Theri.
Elangovan served as the president of the Tamil Nadu Congress committee, TNCC between 2014, and 2012. He is married to Varalakshmi and his younger son is Sanjay Sampath.
