The next morning, Thorfinn wakes up out of the blue from a nightmare to see Einar lying next to him. Later on that day, Einar confesses to screaming Askeladd’s name to a companion while he was sleeping. Then, Thorfinn explains to Einar that Askeladd truly killed his father and that he has spent most of his life wishing to get revenge on him for the crime. Yet now that Askeladd is no longer alive, Thorfinn feels meaningless and empty.
When Einar questions them about the wheat issue, one of them makes fun of the pair by saying that foods cultivated by slaves are not fit for human consumption. This has just irritated Einar to the point that he attempts to punch the man.
Nevertheless, Thorfinn hits and fractures the retainer’s jaw before he can do that. The slave couple and the remaining retainers soon start fighting, and it quickly gets out of hand. Later, a battle started between Thorfinn and Einar when they ran into the retainers by chance.
