While the official competition to decide new world junior champions will begin on 1 March, players will take part in two days of practice.
The 2023 ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships
The Canada Olympic Park, which hosted the Olympic Winter Games Calgary 1988, will host many of the world’s best young skaters from March 1-4. Almost 180 athletes will compete at the WinSport Arena in the four regular categories. The four events are: junior men’s and junior women’s singles, junior pairs, and junior ice dance.
For the 2022/23 season, all the four defending junior champion skaters and teams have moved up to the senior level. This means that all the events will feature first-time winners. Moreover, much to the disappointment for skaters and supporters from Russia and Belarus, the International Skating Union will still continue with their suspension.
Junior Grand Prix Final winners look for another win
Going into the competition, all the four winners of the December’s Junior Grand Prix Final (JGPF) are the clear favourites at the World Junior Championships. The four winners are:
- Nikolaj Memola (junior men, Italy)
- Shimada Mao (junior women, Japan)
- Anastasia Golubeva / Hektor Giotopoulos Moore (junior pairs, Australia)
- Nadiia Bashynska / Peter Beaumont (junior ice dance, Canada)
The 2023 ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships competition preview
As things stand, Italy’s Memola and Japan’s Miura Kao are front-runners in the junior men’s category. Both skaters have already tasted success even at the senior level. Memola, won senior bronze at the Winter World University Games in Lake Placid, New York, in January. Miura on the other hand, won the Four Continents Championships. USA’s Lucas Broussard, who won silver at JGPF, is also another worthy competitor.
As for the junior women’s category, it will likely be a repeat of JGPF. Japan’s Shimada will go up against Republic of Korea skater Shin Ji-a again. Shin, Shimada’s teammate Nakai Ami (fourth at JGPF), are the closest competitors to Shimada considering the season’s high scores. Switzerland’s Kimmy Repond, who won a European senior bronze medallist, will also be looking for a podium finish.
This year’s pairs category feature just 14 pairs. Last year’s silver medallists Golubeva and Giotopoulos Moore will be hoping to claim Australia’s first gold medal since 2017. JGPF runners-up Sophia Baram / Daniel Tioumentsev of the United States are their fiercest rivals. Meanwhile Ukraine’s Violetta Sierova / Ivan Khobta and Japan’s Murakami Haruna / Moriguchi Sumitada will have their eyes on bronze.
As for the ice dance, Ontario-based Bashynska and Beaumont who will represent the hosts are Canada’s best chance of a medal win. The duo won last year’s world junior bronze medallists and they will enter the competition as favourites. Republic of Korea’s Hannah Lim / Quan Ye, who won the JGPF silver, will be their closest rivals.
