Who is Aaley Muhammad Iqbal?

Aaley Muhammad Iqbal is the son of AAP’s Member of the Legislative Assembly in Delhi. He graduated from high school and earned his Class 12 diploma from the National Institute of Open Schooling in 2010.

The 29-year-old politician is a social activist and boasts about having experience as a three-time councillor of New Delhi. He is the councillor from the Chandini Mahal ward of Delhi. Iqbal became a councillor from Tukman Gate in 2012 and Dekhi Gate ward in 2017.

His candidature for the post is regarded as the AAP’s attempt to woo Muslim voters. This is an attempt to overshadow the fatal riots which happened in East Delhi in 2020 for the Citizenship Amendment Act. Furthermore, Arvind Kejriwal has been characteristically non-vocal on multiple issues that concern the minority community.

Meanwhile, Iqbal’s father blames the MLA’s poor and unsatisfactory performance for losing the Muslim votes this time.

The position of Delhi’s mayor is held by professor turned-politician Shelly Oberoi. She was the AAP’s mayoral candidate and won by defeating the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Rekha Gupta by a margin of 34 votes.
