Tuesday, February 21 was the first day of Sha’ban 1444 AH (Anno Hegirae in Latin, or “in the year of the Hijra”). Sha’ban is a month that comes before Ramadan in the Islamic Hijri calendar. It serves as a reminder that Ramadan is just around the corner.

Whereas, Eid ul Fitr signals the completion of Muslims’ one month-long fast. The first day of Eid ul Fitr is anticipated to be Friday, April 21, 2023.

The announcement was confirmed by the General Administration of Islamic Affairs and Endowments website.

To commemorate the conclusion of the holy month and the start of Shawwal, the 10th month, the procedure is repeated. It can be challenging to look for the new crescent because it typically appears faintly and only lasts for 20 minutes. The committee uses telescopes to locate the crescent moon, which they then verify with their own eyes.

Based on the moon-sighting custom, the beginning of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr will be confirmed closer to the date.

Beginning Of Shaban

The existence of the crescent moon on Monday night has not yet been formally confirmed. The beginning of an Islamic calendar month is indicated by the crescent moon.

Depending on when the crescent moon is visible, the length of an Islamic calendar month can be either 29 or 30 days. Astronomical studies predict that Sha’ban will continue for 30 days and that the holy month of Ramadan will likely start on March 23.

The first day of Eid al Fitr is likely to be on Friday, April 21, and residents are likely to observe a fast for 29 days.

The month of Sha’ban is often used by Muslims to get their bodies ready for the dawn to twilight fasting during Ramadan.

In the UAE, Ramadan customs start in the middle of Sha’ban. Children dress up for Haq al Layla, a regional Emirati celebration, and perform music and poetry while visiting houses in the neighbourhood. They are greeted by their neighbours with sweets and other treats.
