Russell Neal was charged with first-degree murder but was later found unfit to stand trial by reason of insanity. In July 2014, authorities found Catherine Martinez brutally beaten and stabbed to death after Neal walked into the Houston Police Department and informed them of the fight he had with his wife, and that she needed medical attention.

In 1989, Russell Neal was a key member of the R&B group, Hi-Five, which went on to achieve great commercial success. The group’s popularity skyrocketed in 1990, following a string of highly successful releases that included numerous Top 10 hits.

Following allegations of murder, Russell Neal was charged with first-degree murder and released on a bond of $100,000. However, two months later, his bond was revoked after Russell claimed insanity and even went so far as to state that his name was “Jesus Christ.”
Prosecutors dismissed Russell’s claims of insanity and refused to drop the charges, believing that he knew what he was doing at the time of his wife’s alleged murder. Nonetheless, he later was later found to be unfit to stand trial and was therefore sent for treatment to Rusk State Hospital, a mental institution.
Currently, Russell Neal remains under evaluation while he awaits trial, and he maintains that he was temporarily insane when the alleged murder occurred. Despite this, the charges still stand, and Russell will likely face a legal battle in the future.
