India secure historic first semi-finals entry

Team India secured a semi-finals berth at the ongoing Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships 2023 with a 3-2 victory over Hong Kong. All the matches took place in Dubai on Friday. As the team progresses to the semi-final, they have also assured themselves of a maiden medal.

What makes it more special is that, it is the first time that India has progressed into the semi-finals of the competition. Back in 2019, India got knocked out during the group stages. Back in 2017, during the inaugural edition, Thailand knocked out India 3-2 in the quarter-finals round.

Team India was the last team to qualify for the semi-finals, thus securing the last-four spot. As such, along with the three other semi-finalists, India will also automatically qualify for the Sudirman Cup 2023. The competition will take place in China later this year.

Given below are all the different matches that took place on Friday, category wise:

Mixed doubles

Mixed doubles took place at the Dubai Exhibition Centre, featuring the in-form mixed doubles pair, Ishaan Bhatnagar and Tanisha Crasto. The Indian pair led with a 10-0 lead in the first game against Hong Kong’s Lee Chun Hei Reginald and NG Tsz Yau. However, the Hong Kong pair ended up producing a remarkable comeback.

The pair simply reduced the deficit and then saved two game points later to eventually win the first game. Following the win, Lee Chun Hei Reginald and NG Tsz Yau also won the second game. This time however, in a more convincing manner. The pair won the match 26-24, 21-17.

Men’s Singles

In the men’s singles, India’s Commonwealth Games men’s singles champion Lakshya Sen represented India. He went up against the current world No. 14 NG Ka Long Angus. The two met each other during the second match of the five-match tie. Despite winning a very close first game, Lakshya Sen simply ended up losing the match 22-20, 19-21, 18-21.

Men’s Doubles

India’s Men’s Doubles team was a makeshift pair of Chirag Shetty and Dhruv Kapila. The pair however, made a strong start against Hong Kong’s Tang Chun Man and Yeung Shing Choi. The Hong Kong pair, were initially down 17-13 down, but made a comeback to win the first game.

However, Chirag Shetty, who is a world championships bronze medallist in doubles, brought his A-game. Chirag demonstrated a much-needed composure as he led India’s fightback to secure a semi-finals spot. Eventually, the Indian men’s doubles pair won 20-22, 21-16, 21-11 against the Hong Kong pair.

Women’s Singles

For the Women’s singles, India had their top player PV Sindhu, who is a two-time Olympic medallist. She is also currently the world No. 9 in the badminton world rankings. However, she got off to a bad start as world No. 258 Saloni Mehta won the first game.

However, the Indian badminton star quickly refocused and eventually won the match 16-21, 21-7, 21-9. Her win stretched the tie 2-2, leading it into the final decider.

Women’s Doubles

India and Hong Kong faced each other in the Women’s Doubles with the semi-final spot on the line. India’s women’s doubles pair were Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly, who were both 19-year-olds.

Despite their young age, the pair delivered a knockout blow to the Hong Kong pair. Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly beat Ng Tsz Yau and Ng Wing Yung 21-13, 21-12 in the women’s doubles match. The final win secured a first ever, semi-final spot for India in the competition.

The Indian badminton team will now take on reigning champions China in the semi-finals on Saturday. China made it into the semis after defeating Malaysia in the other quarter-finals rounds.
