It was a historic day in women’s cricket as the WPL auction saw a total of 409 cricketers go under the hammer, with 163 of those cricketers being overseas players.
First female auctioneer to oversee major cricket auction in India
It is indeed a monumental occasion and a landmark for the BCCI, following their appointment of Mallika Sagar as the first female auctioneer to oversee a major cricket auction in India.
The WPL itself is already an important part in women’s cricket as the first major women’s cricket league in India. While speaking ahead of the mega auction, Mallika shared how historic the moment would be for women’s cricket in general and how Indian women cricketers will receive their fair share of representation on the international stage.

Jio Cinema shared a video on social media on Monday where Mallika Sagar said:
Very, very, very proud. I am delighted for the cricketers who will be the part of the premier league tomorrow. And I think it’s a huge moment, a historic moment for women’s cricket. I think finally, Indian women’s cricketers will get their due on the international stage. They will have the ability to play at the highest level.”

Mallika Sagar is a Mumbai-based art collector who also works as a consultant for Modern and Contemporary Indian art. The WPL auctioneer is also a partner with the Art India consultants firm. Moreover, Mallika also has plenty of experience conducting auctions with Pundoles, which is an art gallery in Mumbai.
She is aged 48. She is not on Instagram.
Previous experiences
Besides being the first female auctioneer for the WPL 2023, Mallika was also the first female auctioneer of Indian origin. The 48-year-old began her career at Christie’s where she held the first sale of Modern Indian Art in New York back in 2000. Apart from that, she also previously served as the auctioneer for the 2021 Pro Kabaddi League (PKL).
Mallika is the first female auctioneer throughout the 15-year history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). In the men’s IPL auctions, Hugh Edmeades and Richard Madley have conducted the auction over the years. However, in the 2022 edition, Charu Sharma had to fill in for Edmeades after he sustained a heart attack.
