The leaked fax sent in by Lionel Messi last year details how the player had tried to depart the La Liga club
Although the saga around Lionel Messi and FC Barcelona finally came to an end earlier last month after the Argentine switched to PSG, it was one which stretched the course of a year.
It all began in 2020 when Lionel Messi had decided to depart the land of the Spanish club. While Messi and Barcelona had finally made amends with the player signing a contract extension, there was a time when Messi was adamant to depart the club.
Fax Lionel Messi Sent To FC Barcelona In 2020 Asking For Transfer Leaked
And now, details of what Messi had said to Barcelona during last year have come to light with the fax he had sent to the club asking for his contract to be terminated being leaked. The fax see Messi talk about how he wanted to end his relationship with Barcelona despite skipping the June 10 deadline owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The fax reads: “By means of the present, and in accordance with the provisions of clause 3.1. of the contract of November 25, 2017, I express to you my willingness to terminate my employment contract as a professional footballer with an effective date of August 30, 2020.
I exercise my right to terminate the contract with effect date August 30 2020, with the consequences provided in the aforementioned provision 3.1.
“Yours sincerely, Lionel Andrés Messi.”
Things had since mended between the two parties with both sitting at the table ahead of the 2021/22 season to chalk out new terms for a contract extension. However, despite Messi putting pen to paper, a potential deal collapsed owing to the La Liga salary cap with Barcelona seeing a colossal wage bill.
