On Tuesday, February 7, 2023, at the Mostafa Kamal Stadium in Dhaka, the India U-20 Women’s Team, needing just a draw to guarantee their place in the SAFF U-20 Women’s Championship Final, surrendered in the second half and lost 1-3 to Nepal.
Bangladesh finished the Group Stage with seven points after three games, followed by Nepal with six points and India with four.
India took the lead early on in the game, but Nepal fought back in the second half to make it a tale of two halves. Apurna Narzary gave India the early advantage, but goals from Anjali Chand, Preeti Rai, and Amisha Karki gave Nepal the advantage and guaranteed them a position in the championship game against Bangladesh.
Nepal vs Bangladesh: As it happened
Bangladesh kicked off the championship match with an early chance in just 3rd minute of the game as Mafuza Khatun made an attempt to score with a header from a corner, but the attempt was unsuccessful.
As they score their goal in front of the numerous home fans who entered the stadium, Bangladesh enjoyed the majority, if not all, of the opportunities in the first 10 minutes. Despite the free kick getting wasted it seemed Bangladesh dominating.
Meanwhile, Anjali Chand of Nepal suffered an injury for the second time, and a stretcher emerged to take her from the field and she was replaced by Sunkala Rai.
Yet again, there was another chance for the eventual champions but Kabita, the goalkeeper for Nepal, made a good save and extended her strong play into the championship.
Bangladesh finally with the opener just before the halftime whistle as Ripa hit the target cleanly, her curving shot proved to be too strong from the opposition goalie.
The hosts scored two goals and managed to get a clean sheet in the first half as a stumbling Aklima did just enough to move the ball into Shamsunnahar’s path, where she slid it past the goalkeeper for Nepal.
In the second half, Nepal looked a little dominating for some time but all the chances to score were wasted.
It was not enough for the hosts as Ripa’s substitute Unnoti Khatun, without a mistake converted the free kick into a third, for them, from the edge of the box, to clinch the SAFF U-20 Championship title with a score of 3-0.
