Carlos Queiroz, full name Carlos Manuel Brito Leal de Queiroz was born on 1 March 1953, in Nampula, Portuguese Mozambique. Queiroz famously led Iran to the FIFA World Cup on three occasions – in 2014, 2018, and 2022.
Besides Iran, he also helped South Africa in 2002 and Portugal in the 2010 World Cups. The skilled tactician also managed Real Madrid and Sporting CP and was an assistant under Sir Alex Ferguson of Manchester United.

2010 World Cup
After working for several clubs and nations, Carlos Queiroz took charge of the Portugal national team in 2008 and led them to the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Under his leadership, Portugal drew a game with Ivory Coast, beat North Korea, and drew again with Brazil to reach the last 16. However, the team lost in the Round of 16 following a 1-0 defeat to Spain following which he was sacked in the following year.
2014 World Cup
After he got sacked as the Portuguese manager, he took charge of the Iran national team in 2011. Carlos led Iran to the 2014 and 2018 World Cups. In the 2014 World cup, Iran failed to get past the group stage after drawing against Nigeria, and losing to Argentina, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
2018 World Cup
Carlos failed to lead Iran into the 2018 World Cup knockouts again after beating Morocco and losing against Spain, and drawing their last game against Portugal.
The following year, Carlos Queiroz managed Colombia from 2019-2020 and then Egypt from 2021-2022 as their head coach. Carlos led Egypt to the 2021 AFCON final, but lost to Senegal on penalties. Queiroz could not lead Egypt to the FIFA World Cup 2022, after losing yet again to Senegal on penalties.
2022 World Cup
Carlos took charge of Iran for the third time in September 2022 leading them to the FIFA World Cup 2022. Iran suffered a 6-2 defeat from England, but beat Wales 2-0 in their second game. They played their final match against USA and qualified for the knockouts for the first time.
Club career
Besides working as the head coach for national sides, Carlos Queiroz also managed Spanish giants Real Madrid from 2003-2004. He was also worked as the assistant manager for Man Utd from 2002-2003 and then from 2004-2008 under Sir Alex Ferguson.
