What happened to Tyre Nichols? Explained!
Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man, was brutally beaten by five Black policemen of the Memphis Police Department (MPD) on January 7, 2023, during a routine traffic check. Nichols was sent to the hospital, where he remained until his death three days later.
Officers said they pulled over Nichols for speeding. He was dragged from his car and subjected to pepper spray and a taser. Nichols managed to escape during the chaos. After authorities located Nichols, they assaulted him for about three minutes. This included punches, kicks, and baton blows to the back while he was detained.
The five officers were terminated on January 20 after investigations were launched by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the United States Department of Justice.
