Lanny debuted in the ring for the first time with the All-South Wrestling Alliance in 1974. In his first bout, he was defeated by Wayne Cowan. After only a few months, he left to work for National Wrestling Alliance, and later for his father’s company, International Championship Wrestling. He competed in several matches for the Continental Wrestling Association.
In July of 1985, the wrestler debuted for the World Wrestling Federation. He was with the company for seven years and became well-known for carrying poetry-themed frisbees to the ring and reciting them at opponents. When he finished reading the poem, he’d toss the frisbees into the crowd.

Poffo departed the WWF in 1992 and signed with the WWC, the WWF’s main rival promotion, in 1995. In January of 2020, he wrestled in SCW for the last time. In the same year, he made an appearance on AEW Dynamite to honour Memphis Wrestling’s past greats.
