The bagpiper of these protests was Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton who saw his lead at the top cut down to a meagre 3 points from 8. In a post on Instagram, the Mercedes man went onto call the race as a farce with him seething over how the fans were devoid of a proper race.

As the calls for the spectators to get refunded for their tickets grew, F1’s CEO, Stefano Domenicali weighed in on the matter with him asserting that there was no provision to give the fans their money back.

He explained: “You can pay the ticket and then [it is] what it is.

“At the end of the day the organiser, together with us, will consider the attention, the maximum attention to the fans, that’s for sure.

“The race is there. Formally, it is a race. It is a matter of understanding what is the sign of attention the organiser would like to do with the fans.”
