The hoax first surfaced in late 2022, but it really took off in January 2023, when it began to affect people all around the world.
You get a direct message from an unknown individual saying, “Look who died in an accident; I think you knew him,” followed by a link that you need to click on.
The message asks you to click on the link to see whether you know the person who has passed away, even though it appears to be from a legitimate Facebook or TikTok member. Sometimes the message seems to be from one of your friends, but it actually came from a hacked or compromised account.
According to Malware Tips, when you click on the link, the identical fraudulent message is unknowingly forwarded to your friends. It’s a nasty scam in which con artists try to hijack your phone or computer and take your information if you click.
