Rishabh Pant Finds Himself Embroiled In Controversy After Umpires Find Him Keeping Wickets With Illegally-Taped Gloves

Rishabh Pant was asked to remove the tape he was using between the webbing of his gloves during day 2 of the England vs India 3rd test match

After everything went hunk dory for the Indian side during the Lord’s test match, things couldn’t have gotten more hanky panky come the Leeds fixture. Things have taken no time in going from bad to worse for the visitors in the 3rd test match with the team failing to put one step in the right direction.

Dwindling with the bat as they were folded out for a scanty 78 in the first innings, the Indian bowlers failed to compensate for the batsmen’s failures. Wayward bowling saw the hosts cross the 400 run symbolic milestone on day 2 with captain Joe Root scoring his third century of the series in as many encounters.

However, the colossal over 300 run deficit they stare at isn’t the only of problems staring India in the face at the moment. Day 2 of the Headingley fixture saw Rishabh Pant using illegal tape between the webbing of his gloves.

It first came to light in the 94th over when Dawid Malan was trying to flick a ball from Mohammed Siraj towards the fine leg boundary. He over misconnected to only nick the ball, a catch which was taken by Pant.

India went onto take DRS, a decision which swung in their favour as Malan was rightly given out. However after tea, Pant was immediately called upon by umpire Richard Kettleborough along with Virat Kohli.

After the discussion between the triad, cameras showed Kohli peeling the strapping from the fourth and fifth fingers of Pant’s gloves before play resumed. Pant’s fingers were taped when he can snagged onto Malan’s catch as well with many calling the dismissal to be a wrong one owing to Pant violating the norms.

Nasser Hussain went onto talk about the incident during commentary as he said, “We’re hearing from the third umpire, Richard Illingworth, that he wasn’t allowed and he’s not allowed to tape his gloves like that.”

According to the ICC guidelines, a wicket-keeper isn’t allowed to tape his fingers in the manner Pant did.

Law 27.2.1 states: “If, as permitted under 27.1, the wicketkeeper wears gloves, they shall have no webbing between the fingers except joining index finger and thumb, where webbing may be inserted as a means of support.”

Law 28.1 states: “Protection for the hand or fingers may be worn only with the consent of the umpires.”
