BWF Sudirman Cup Finals 2021: Schedule And Draw Released, Know Where Is Team India Placed

The Group Stage Draw of the BWF Sudirman Cup Finals 2021 was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, know where India stand and the schedule

The tournament will be held in Vantaa, Finland from 26 September – 3 October 2021

With Finland hosting a BWF major event for the first time. This will be the 17th Edition of Sudirman Cup – a World Mixed Team Badminton Championships, which is held every two years. It consists of 5 matches being played – Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles. China is the defending Champion.

Unlike the previous format of the tournament, this year’s Sudirman Cup will see 16 Teams contest in four groups of 4 teams. The competition starts with a group stage and is followed by a knockout stage. Here the top 2 teams, from each group qualify for the quarterfinals. Then another draw will be held for the quarterfinals stage.

The top two seeds were assigned top position in opposite groups i.e. A1 and D1. The top-seeded teams are China and Japan. The other teams according to their seeds were randomly drawn to the groups.

How Does It Look For Team India – The Draw and Squad

India has a relatively tough draw as they are placed in Group A alongside defending champion China, who is also the most successful team in the history of the Sudirman Cup with 11 titles. And the other teams in Group A are 2019 bronze medalist Thailand and host nation Finland.

Badminton Association of India (BAI) has selected some players directly for the tournament who does not need to go through the trials based on their BWF World Rankings. Those players are PV Sindhu, Saina Nehwal, Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, B Sai Praneeth and Kidambi Srikanth.

The BAI will conduct selection trials in Hyderabad at Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy from 28 August 2021 onwards to complete the team headed to Finland.
