Who is David Crosby?

David Crosby was a well-known American singer, guitarist, and songwriter. He has been in the news because he passed away at the age of 81.

His full name was David Van Cortlandt Crosby. He was born on August 14, 1941, in Los Angeles, California, U.S. His father’s name was Floyd Crosby, who was an Academy Award-winning cinematographer, and his mother’s name was Aliph Van Cortlandt Whitehead, who was a salesperson at Macy’s department store. He also had an elder brother named Ethan Crosby, who was also a musician.

He did his schooling at University Elementary School in Los Angeles, the Crane Country Day School in Montecito, and Laguna Blanca School in Santa Barbara.

Later, Crosby attended Santa Barbara City College’s acting program for a short time before discontinuing it to pursue a career in music.

In May 1987, he married Jan Dance, with whom he had a son named Django Crosby. He also had three more children: James Raymond, a son with Celia Crawford Ferguson; Erika, a daughter with Jackie Guthrie; and Donovan Crosby, a daughter with his ex-girlfriend Debbie Donovan.

He was revealed to be the sperm donor of two children through artificial insemination in January 2000 by Melissa Etheridge and her companion Julie Cypher.

He died on January 18, 2022. At the time of his death, he was 81 years old.

His career

After quitting school to focus on music, David Crosby played in Chicago and Greenwich Village with vocalist Terry Callier, but they were unable to land a recording deal.

In 1963, under the direction of renowned record producer and band manager Jim Dickson, he conducted his first solo session. He, Jim McGuinn, and Gene Clark established the Jet Set as their own band in 1964.

The Byrds changed their name back to the Byrds in 1965, and they achieved enormous success with Bob Dylan’s “Mr. Tambourine Man.” Despite their notoriety and success, the Byrds disbanded in 1967 as a result of artistic disagreements.

With former Buffalo Springfield guitarist Stephen Stills, Crosby then began jamming. In 1969, Crosby, Stills, and Nash released their self-titled debut album, which became an instant hit. They made a name for themselves as one of the top live bands and the undisputed masterminds behind major musical and cultural movements.

In his career, Crosby received a lot of honors and trophies. For “Crosby, Stills, and Nash,” he received the Grammy in 1969 for “Best New Artist.” He achieved the extraordinary distinction of receiving two inductions into the prestigious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
