Racing Team India had decided to take back their participation from 24 Hours of Le Mans despite an impressive soiree at the Asian Le Mans

As the 89th edition of 24 Hours of Le Mans got underway today at 7:30pm IST, the eyes yearned for could have been. Had things unfolded perfectly and the COVID pandemic was staved, India would have seen their first ever representation at the marquee race.

After finishing fifth in the Asian Le Mans series earlier this year, Racing Team India had ended up sealing their berth in the marquee race slated for August. It was a historic achievement for the triad of Narain Karthikeyan, Arjun Maini and Naveen Rao with the three set to fly the country’s flag high at one of the most grueling and vigorous races in the world of motorsports.

COVID Norms Saw Racing Team India Withdraw From Le Mans 2021

However, as the date for the race edged closer with August 21-22 set to see the duration of the 24 hour race, the team decided it would not be able to fulfill its obligations. Citing logistic issues owing to the ongoing COVID pandemic, the side decided to withdraw itself from the marquee event.

A statement released by the team went onto say, “Despite being granted an invitation to participate in this blue riband event of the global motorsport calendar, due to COVID-19 related travel restrictions and other factors, it will not be possible for the teams’ drivers and other personnel to travel to France for this event.”

Racing Team India who had deployed an Oreca-07 in the Asian Le Mans Series, were set to use the Ligier JS P217 LMP2 prototype as their car come Le Mans 2021. The side is now veering up to participate in the Asian Le Mans 2022 series as it strives to once again qualify for Le Mans in 2022.
