Surviving Idaho murders roommates Bethany Funke, Dylan Mortensen
The only survivors of the murders, 21-year-olds Dylan Mortensen and Bethany Funke, discovered their friends’ dead in their off-campus house hours after the vicious attack. They were said to have slept off during the slaughter throughout the first seven weeks of the police probe.
The killer came face to face with Mortensen right before he crept out of the campus residence.
Who are Dylan Mortensen and Bethany Funke?
The four people who were killed, Ethan Chapin, 20, Xana Kernodle, 20, Madison Mogen, 21, and Kaylee Goncalves, 21, all resided with Funke and Mortensen. All the students were 21 years old, and were friends staying together at the Moscow home at 1122 King Road. They were both present when the murders took place.
Floorplans display the first floor of the split-level house was occupied by Funke and Mortensen, and it was secured by a code-locked door. A sliding glass door led to the second and third levels, where the victims had been sleeping. Together with Kernodle and Mogen, Funke was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority.
The Evening Of The Murders
While confirming they arrived home just after one in the morning, police have not disclosed where Funke and Mortensen were in the hours before the deaths. By 2:00 a.m., the four victims had returned to their home.
Mortensen awoke at approximately 4 a.m. after hearing voices, according to a police report that was revealed in court. She allegedly believed she overheard Goncalves weeping and saying, “There’s someone here,” from Kernodle’s chamber.
When Mortensen opened her door, a “figure dressed in black with a mask covering the person’s lips and nostrils” was approaching her. She claimed that she was startled and stood still, but the man simply passed her and exited through the back sliding glass door.
The two were immediately eliminated as suspects after investigators first suggested that Funke and Mortensen would be “important” to solving the crime. The women cooperated with their inquiries.
Aftermath
Since the murders, Funke and Mortensen have generally kept quiet. During a December memorial ceremony for Kernodle, a clergyman read aloud the letters that the two had written to their deceased pals.
The four buddies, according to Mortensen, “changed the way I look at life.”
“This world just won’t be the same without you,” Funke said, referring to the victims who “were all gifts to this planet in their own individual manner.”
It appears that the two ladies got identical tattoos to honour their four buddies. They had angel wings and the initials of the victims’ names, MKXE, inscribed on their arms. Both have set their Instagram to private.
