The origin of ‘Gunners’
By the name of “Dial Square,” a small group of manufacturing workers in the Woolwich Arsenal Armament Factory founded Arsenal around the end of 1886. The Sundial over their factory’s entrance inspired the club’s founders to give it that name. The club started taking part in competitions, which led to a natural increase in popularity in the community. Players from Nottingham Forest, a top-flight club at the time, began joining Dial Square and brought their recognisable red uniforms with them.

Arsenal’s recognisable “Cannon” on its crest
Over the course of its existence, Arsenal’s logo has changed over 11 times. Arsenal unveiled its initial emblem in 1888, which was the same as the Metropolitan Borough crest for its hometown of Woolwich. Because Arsenal had just moved to Highbury as their home stadium, the trademark “Cannon” appeared in their emblem for the first time in 1992. Since that time, the Cannon has remained in all of the crests as a reminder of the football team’s beginnings.
